TVA Board Votes to Retire Over 2,000 MW of Coal-fired Generation

LCG, February 14, 2019--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board voted today to retire both the Paradise Unit 3 and Bull Run coal-fired power plants within the next few years. The closures will reduce the TVA fleet electric generating capacity by 2,031 MW.

TVA's CEO stated, "This decision is not about coal. It's about economics. It's about keeping rates as low as feasible. Continued operation will impose significant costs to our customers that can be entirely avoided. When we run the units, which is infrequently, at least half the time they're out of the money."

The Bull Run Fossil Plant is located near Oak Ridge, Tennessee and began operations in 1967. The plant has an electric generating capacity of 881 MW.

The Paradise Fossil Plant is located in western Kentucky on the Green River. Unit 3 became operational in 1970, with a capacity of 1,150 MW. Units 1 and 2 commenced operations in 1963, each with a generation capacity of 704 MW. Units 1 and 2 were retired in 2017 and replaced in 2017 by the natural gas-fired Paradise Combined Cycle Plant, which has an electric generating capacity of 1,025 MW.

Paradise Unit 3 may be retired in December 2020, and Bull Run may be retired in December 2023.
