Cabot Sells LNG Unit to Tractebel for $680 Million
LCG, July 13, 2000--Cabot Corp. will sell its Cabot Liquefied Natural Gas unit for $680 million to Tractebel, the Belgian energy company recently taken over by French Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux. The deal is expected to close by the end of next month.Tractebel will get Cabots LNG terminal in Everett, Mass., a 10 percent interest in a liquefaction facility in Trinidad and Tobago, and Cabots LNG tanker Matthew. The acquisition will provide natural gas to fuel Tractebel power plants in New England.Matthew was built in 1979 by Newport News Shipbuilding of the U.S. She is a fast (20-knot) tanker with a capacity of about 4.5 million cubic feet of LNG."In the present market circumstances, this acquisition will contribute positively to Tractebel's results from the outset," said Jean-Pierre Hansen, Tractebel chief executive. "The integration of Cabot LNG will create synergies with existing LNG and natural gas operations within our group."Tractebel said in a statement that the acquisition will give it a 20 percent share of the Atlantic basin and creates a firm foothold in the physical gas markets in the Northeast that will allow the company to serve the power industry in the northeastern United States.Tractebel operated 20 U.S. power plants in 12 states, including Massachusetts.
