LCG, July 26, 2000--Constellation Nuclear Services Inc., the operator of Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.s 1,700 megawatt Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant located 45 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., said yesterday that it will share the lessons learned from the successful relicensing of the plant.

Constellation and the Electric Power Research Institute will host a three-day license renewal workshop in September, focusing on the things Constellation did to earn Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval of the relicensing applications for Calvert Cliffs two reactors.

According to the company, the workshop will cover the phases of the license renewal process thatbegin after submittal of the License Renewal Application and will feature panel discussions with plantsupervisors and project engineers involved in license renewal at the Calvert Cliffs plant, and guestspeakers from other license renewal organizations and utilities.

"Those of us who were deeply involved in this undertaking truly believe that license renewal is not the end point, but a beginning that offers many possibilities and opportunities for plants to remainsafe, highly efficient and competitive. It requires looking down the road beyond license renewal,"said Barth Doroshuk, president and chief operating officer of Constellation Nuclear Services.

Doroshuk emphasized the practical applications to be drawn from the Calvert Cliffs license renewal project. "The workshop is designed to offer useful guidance to industry managers who areinterested in license renewal technology transfer, related cost reductions and the true cost of lifeextension," he said.

In addition to the plant work involved in relicensing, the workshop will feature sessions dealing specifically with the documents and approval process involved in license renewal, including first-hand accounts of the final approval process, the implementation processes and related streamlining techniques, new license requirements, and last-minute issues that invariably arise, the company said.
