UtiliCorp in $189 Million Winning Bid for Western Australia's AlintaGas
LCG, Aug. 1, 2000--UtiliCorp United said yesterday that it and its Australian affiliate United Energy Ltd. had won the bidding for 45 percent of AlintaGas, a natural gas distribution company being offered by the government of the state of Western Australia, with an offer of $189 million (U.S.).AlintaGas, is based in Perth, serves about 400,000 customers and is Western Australia's principal gas distributor. The remaining 55 percent of the company will be sold to the public in Australia in a public offering scheduled for September.Robert K. Green, president and chief operating officer of UtiliCorp and chairman of United Energy, said "AlintaGas is a well-positioned business and complements our existing Australian business very well. We expect this transaction to be slightly accretive to UtiliCorp earnings in its first year of operations."UtiliCorp got into the Australian energy business when, in 1995, it was part of a consortium that purchased United Energy from the state of Victoria. It now owns 34 percent of United Energy.UtiliCorp said it expected to close the AlintaGas deal by the end of October.
