New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.

Constellation Announces 650 Megawatts for Illinois

LCG, Aug. 18, 2000--Constellation Power Source, an affiliate of Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., said on Thursday that an ad hoc subsidiary, Holland Energy LLC, will build a 650 megawatt merchant power plant costing $250 million in Holland Township, Ill.

Construction of the new plant is scheduled to begin next week with commercial operation expected in June 2002. Power from the facility, a combined-cycle plant with two gas turbines and one steam turbine, will be sold into the regional wholesale electricity market.

"Deregulation of electric markets across the country is creating opportunities to meet wholesaleenergy demands in growing regions like the Midwest," Charles W. Shivery, the companys president said, adding "Constellation Power Source is looking for the best fit, where the availability of additional energy will meet the needs of the community, the market, and our company."

The company also recently announced plans to construct a 250 megawatt peaking plant near Bristol, Va., and a 300 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in the University Park suburb of Chicago.
