New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.

Massachusetts OKs Southern Union Acquisitions

LCG, Sept. 11, 2000Southern Union Co. said on Friday that the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy has approved its acquisitions of Fall River Gas Co. and Providence Energy Corp.

According to the company, all other required approvals have been granted and both transactions are expected to close by the end of the month, after necessary paperwork has been completed.

"The receipt of the Massachusetts approvals marks the final step in consummating these excitingmergers," said Peter H. Kelley, president and chief operating officer of Southern Union Company. "Southern Union is looking forward to implementing its technology-based customer service initiatives in these service territories."

James Dodge, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Providence Energy, said "The approval by the MDTE represents the final regulatory approval necessary to bring our merger with Southern Union to completion. We can now move forward to finalize this transaction, which we expect toclose by the end of September, and begin our exciting new role as their New England hub."

The MDTE also issued an order approving the merger into Providence Energy of its wholly owned subsidiary North Attleboro Gas Co., which serves about 3,800 customers in Massachusetts, near the Rhode island border. That action cleans up the bill of sale for Southern Union's purchase.

Southern Union said its pending acquisition of Valley Resources Inc. had been approved by the Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers and is expected to close on September 20.

The three acquisitions will add about 300,000 customers for Southern Union, making it, in the company's words, "one of the fifth largest natural gas distributors in the nation."
