Bonneville to Buy Calpine Geothermal Power, if Available

LCG, Dec. 4, 2000--Bonneville Power Administration, the federal agency created to harness the energy of rivers in the Pacific Northwest, said on Friday that it has signed an agreement to buy 49.9 megawatts of California geothermal power from Calpine Corp.

The power would come from the Fourmile Hill geothermal project in Northern California, Bonneville said, and the agreement is contingent on Calpine finding a commercially developable source of steam at the site.

Whether subterranean steam is found is not the only issue. The project, just south of the Oregon border, is opposed by environmental groups and Indian tribes. The Pit River Tribe has appealed the decision to develop the site to the federal Interior Board of Land Appeals.

Calpine, which operated the world's largest geothermal power system at The Geysers north of San Francisco, said it hoped to begin exploratory drilling next spring. The company received an award of $20.8 million from the California Energy Commission under its new renewable account to help bring the project to fruition.

Bonneville hopes the project moves forward. "Geothermal energy is very clean compared to burning fossil fuels," said Steve Wright, acting administrator. "Along with wind, solar and other renewable resources, it's a promising source of natural energy here in the West and elsewhere in the country."
