LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Bonneville to Buy Calpine Geothermal Power, if Available
LCG, Dec. 4, 2000--Bonneville Power Administration, the federal agency created to harness the energy of rivers in the Pacific Northwest, said on Friday that it has signed an agreement to buy 49.9 megawatts of California geothermal power from Calpine Corp.The power would come from the Fourmile Hill geothermal project in Northern California, Bonneville said, and the agreement is contingent on Calpine finding a commercially developable source of steam at the site.Whether subterranean steam is found is not the only issue. The project, just south of the Oregon border, is opposed by environmental groups and Indian tribes. The Pit River Tribe has appealed the decision to develop the site to the federal Interior Board of Land Appeals.Calpine, which operated the world's largest geothermal power system at The Geysers north of San Francisco, said it hoped to begin exploratory drilling next spring. The company received an award of $20.8 million from the California Energy Commission under its new renewable account to help bring the project to fruition.Bonneville hopes the project moves forward. "Geothermal energy is very clean compared to burning fossil fuels," said Steve Wright, acting administrator. "Along with wind, solar and other renewable resources, it's a promising source of natural energy here in the West and elsewhere in the country."
