Duke's Nukes Top 92 Percent Capacity Factor in 2000

LCG, Jan. 12, 2001Duke Energy Corp. was aglow this morning with news that the three nuclear power plants operated by its Duke Power subsidiary had their best year ever in 2000 and broke into the 90 percent capacity factor stratosphere for the first time.

The nuclear power plants, Oconee in Seneca, S.C., Catawba in York, S.C., and McGuire in Huntersville, N.C., had a combined capacity factor of more than 92 percent in 2000. Among them, they have seven reactors and produce more than half the power delivered to Duke's 2 million retail customers.

The Oconee capacity factor in 2000 was approximately 92 percent, the highest in the station's27-year history, McGuire's capacity factor last year was almost 96 percent, the second highest in its history, and Catawba's 2000 capacity factor was more than 90 percent, second highest in its history.

Duke said those enviable scores were posted despite refueling outages at five of the seven unitsduring the course of the year. The two units that did not refuel, McGuire unit 1 and Oconee unit 2, hadcapacity factors of approximately 103 percent and 101 percent, respectively.

"The nuclear industry in general has been improving significantly over the years, and it is our goal to be at the forefront," said Michael S. Tuckman, executive vice president for nuclear generation. "We arebuilding a winning team of dedicated employees and managers armed with the knowledge, experienceand equipment necessary to achieve our goal."

Oconee has three 846 megawatt units, Catawba's two units produce 1,129 megawatts each and McGuire has two 1,100 megawatt reactors.
