Electricity, Gas Facilities Weather Seattle Earthquake
LCG, March 1, 2001A 6.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Washington state capital Olympia at 10:54 a.m. yesterday interrupted electric service to thousands but did not significantly damage the area's power transmission and distribution lines or its natural gas pipelines.The utility most affected was Puget Sound Energy Co. which said about 200,000 of its electric and gas customers in and around Olympia lost service but repair crews had restored service to all but around 9,000 by 4:00 p.m.A utility spokesman said the system functioned as it was designed to during the temblor, with circuit breakers shutting off electricity to prevent fires and other problems.The shaker was felt as far north as Vancouver, British Columbia, and as far south as Portland, ore., the home of a giant federal utility which is the largest power supplier in the Northwest. The Bonneville Power Administration said its hydroelectric facilities in the Columbia River Basin were unaffected.Ed Mosey, a Bonneville spokesman, said three substations were hit and circuit breakers tripped, but they were turned back on after technicians determined that no damage had occurred. There were few, if any, interruptions on Bonneville's high-voltage transmission lines, he said.
