Reuters Ranks Big Power Companies Worldwide

LCG, April 11, 2001When Germany's Eon announced its planned takeover of Britain's Powergen earlier this week, it said it would create the world's largest investor-owned electricity and gas utility when measured by market value.

Market value depends on the current trading price of a company's stock, so Reuters decided to rank the top dozen by sales of power, measured in megawatt-hours, and threw in government-owned utilities as well.

Here is Reuters' top twelve:

  1. RAO-UES of Russia (government-owned)
  2. Electricit de France (government-owned)
  3. Eon plus Powergen
  4. Tokyo Electric Power Co.
  5. Enel of Italy (government-owned)
  6. American Electric Power Co. Inc.
  7. RWE of Germany
  8. The Southern Co. of the U.S.
  9. TXU Corp. of the U.S.
  10. Endesa of Spain
  11. Electrobras of Brazil (government-owned)
  12. Scottish Power
