Corps of Engineers Okays 1,080 Megawatt N.Y. Plant
LCG, May 29, 2001--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District said Friday that it has granted a federal permit on an application by Athens Generating Company LP to build a 1,080 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant in the town of Athens, N.Y.Pete Shugert, a spokesman for the Corps of Engineers, said "The construction of this project fulfills a pressing need for electric generation capacity in New York, significantly augmenting the state's power supply and its ability to avoid potential power shortages." The plant will be built on a site about two miles from the Hudson River, about 27 miles downstream from Albany, but will have an intake-outfall facility on the west bank of the river. A little less than an acre of wetlands will be permanently lost to the facility.The Corps of Engineers said it worked with 21 groups seeking to preserve the scenic, cultural, historic and environmentally sensitive characteristics of the plant and river sites and the project was modified to avoid or minimize impacts."The Corps has gone to great lengths to ensure that the impacts from this plant will be minimal, imposing extensive permit conditions that will reduce impacts to environmental resources and historic properties," Shugert said.
