Electric Generation in Eire to Grow 20% in Year
LCG, June 12, 2001--Ireland's electricity generating capacity will grow by 20 per cent next year, the Irish Times reported this morning.Speaking before an Energy Ireland conference in Dublin, Irish Minister of Transport, Energy and Communications Mary O'Rourke said new generating plants in Ringsend and Huntstown, both in Dublin, would add more than 700 megawatts of capacity.The electric industry in Eire will be fully open to competition in 2005, and O'Rourke told the conference about major steps being undertaken to get the republic ready, including the setting up of an independent electric regulatory commission and an independent company, Eirgrid, to operate the national transmission system.John Evans, an economist with the Competition Authority, warned there was a potential problem with arrangements under which Eirgrid did not own the transmission or distribution system assets and the Electricity Supply Board is supposed to carry out all maintenance and construction work.Michael O'Connor, a partner with Matheson Ormsby Prentice, said that planning was proving to be a considerable obstacle to new entrants setting up greenfield power plant developments in Eire, the Irish Times reported. For those planning to invest in, or acquire, existing plants, there were also a limited number of potential targets, O'Connor added.
