Tractebel Building 1,225 Megawatts in 2 U.S. Projects

LCG, Aug. 24, 2001--The North American power project development subsidiary of Belgian utility Tractebel said yesterday that it has begun construction on two U.S. natural gas-fired merchant power plants totaling 1,225 megawatts of electricity generating capacity.

Tractebel Project Development Inc. said it will build a 505 megawatt facility at Chehalis, Wash. at a cost of $360 million. The plant, located midway between Portland, Ore. and Seattle, is scheduled to commence commercial operation in late 2003, when it will begin selling its output into the Northwest Power Pool.

The company will also build a $350 million, 720 megawatt power plant in Wise County, Texas, northwest of Dallas, and will serve the growing demands of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It too will be completed in late 2003, when it will start pushing power into the North Texas regional electricity market.

"The Chehalis and Wise County electric generation projects are important additions to Tractebel'sNorth American power portfolio. Once built, these state-of-the-art facilities will provide clean andreliable energy at competitive prices in regions where the energy is most critically needed," saidWilliam P. Utt, chief executive of Tractebel North America Inc.

Both plants are being built by Reading, Pa.-based Parsons Energy and Chemicals Group Inc. under engineering, procurement, construction contracts.
