X-energy Commences First Irradiation Tests of Advanced TRISO-X Nuclear Fuel at Idaho National Laboratory

LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Calpine Begins Building Florida Power Plant

LCG, Nov. 14, 2001--Calpine Corp. said yesterday that full-scale construction efforts are under way for the 530 megawatt Osprey Energy Center located at Calpine's Auburndale Energy Campus in Auburndale, Fla.

First energy centers and now energy campuses -- power plants are no longer so dirty they need euphemisms, but neither are they places with ivy-covered walls. The word "campus" has survived since Ancient English as meaning a place of education. Let's call a powerhouse a powerhouse.

But back to the campus at Auburndale.

Bob Alff, senior vice president and head of Calpine's eastern region, said, "Our Osprey Energy Center has the distinction of being the first combined-cycle generating project to be built by an independent power producer under the state's strict Power Plant Siting Act. The facility is now well on its way toward being an important part of Florida's energy future."

The new plant, which is expected to enter commercial operation in late 2003, is being built adjacent to a 150 megawatt cogeneration plant owned by Calpine. The capacity of Auburndale is, itself, being expanded by the addition of a 115 megawatt simple-cycle peaking unit that will be in service next year.

Alff enthused "What we now refer to as our Auburndale Energy Campus is unique in our industry, with cogeneration, peaking and combined-cycle technology all at one location. It will remain a showcase for advanced power generation technology for many years to come, as well as creating a strong foothold for our continued development efforts in Florida."
