New Hydropower Allowed by Quebec Indians
LCG, Feb. 4, 2002--A referendum held among James Bay Cree Indians showed 70 percent approval of hydropower development on the Crees' lands.The 70 percent approval was returned by nine communities, who will receive payments of $16 million ($10 million US) in 2002, nearly twice that amount next year, and $46.5 million ($29.2 million US) for the 48 following years.Grand Chief Ted Moses said in an announcement, "this is an historic moment. It is an agreement that vindicates the long Cree campaign since 1975 to have our rights respected." The agreement will be formally signed by Moses and Quebec Premier Bernard Landry on Thursday.Other parts of the agreement, which will need to be approved by the court, guarantee jobs for the Crees in the hydroelectric operations and more independence in logging and other industrial activity. The Cree have agreed not to pursue environmental lawsuits worth $2.4 billion ($1.5 billion US) against the government.The deal would permit development along the Eastman and Rupert Rivers, assuming environmental approvals are granted.
