Coal-Fired Plant Proposed to TVA
LCG, Mar. 5, 2002Developers of a proposed coal-fired power plant hope to sell the entire output of the 100-megawatt plant to the Tennessee Valley Authority.The plant would be built near the Pickwick Dam, in Hardin County, approximately 100 miles east of Memphis, and would begin operations by mid-2004. A public hearing on developer Pickwick Powers proposal will be held today.The plant will require environmental permits, and is now undergoing review. It will utilize powdered limestone to absorb sulphur released in the burning of its fuel, which would be supplied by TVA.TVA has already purchased the output of a 440-megawatt coal-fired plant, the Red Hills Power Station, in Choctaw County, Miss. The agency expects to complete a draft environmental impact statement by the fall, and finalize environmental review of Pickwicks proposal by early 2003.According to spokesman John Moulton of the TVA, approval of the unsolicited proposal will be determined by whether the plant makes any kind of economic sense to us. A non-binding letter of intent to negotiate has been signed.
