Hole Found in the Ohio Nuke
LCG, March 12, 2002-Federal inspectors were surprised to find a hole in an Ohio nuclear plant reactor cap. The hole has been plugged with a non-corroding layer and is no threat to public safety.Very low concentrations of boric acid produced during nuclear fission ate away at the substantial protective cap that shields the reactor vessel. The hole was found during routine maintenance after similar corrosion was found in control rod nozzles, five of which were cracked. Plant operator FirstEnergy says that the hole is unusual and unexpected but would have posed little hazard if it had penetrated the entire cap. Radioactive steam would have escaped into the reactor containment building, and even if the steam made its way outside of the building it would reportedly have little effect upon the public. No speculation was made regarding the effects of corrosion on other parts of the nuclear reactor, but FirstEnergy intends to replace the reactor head in 2004.The plant, located near Lake Erie about 25 miles from Toledo, will remain shut down for at least a month.
