China and Pakistan Make Power Plant Deal

LCG, April 30, 2002--China has agreed to develop two thermal plants in Pakistan.

Signed yesterday, the bilateral memorandum provides for two 300-MW coal-fired power plants, amounting to $600 million. Coal for the plants will be derived from the Tharparkar Desert in the province of Sindh.

According to Sindh Minister Dewan Mohammed Yousuf Farooqi, the plants will be completed inside three years.

China's Shenhua Group Co. Ltd. has agreed to build and operate the plants, which will be located in Tharparkar (also known as Thar). Shenhua will assess Thar coal capability by conducting a geological survey, which will reportedly be completed within a year.

According to U.S. Department of Energy, Pakistan has 3 billion metric tons in recoverable coal reserves.

Shenhua is China's top coal producer and the country's third largest exporter.
