CA ISO Declares Alert, Low Electricity

LCG, May 31, 2002--On Thursday, the CaliforniaIndependent System Operator (ISO) said thatelectric capacity is low since electricity had been sent out-of-state.

The ISO declared the lowest level of alert, thefirst issuance in 9 months, because electricity wassent to the Southwest. Thursday saw a heat wave hitNevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, while two largenuclear plants in California were off-line andtransmission on a north-south line was disturbed.

During the energy crisis such issuances happeneddaily, and the ISO believes that rolling blackoutsprobably will not be necessary this summer. The alertonly applied to Thursday.
