Nebraska Wind Farm Operational Next Month
LCG, September 17, 2002--Eleven Nebraska towns have contracted with the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska to receive power from a new 10.5-megawatt wind farm.The farm, visible from 20 miles away on Interstate 80, cost $14 million. The installation of seven 230-foot-tall turbines was sited in Kimball, population 2,559. According to City Clerk Harold Farrar, "They are the talk of the town. Everybody thinks they look really nice out there."The planned operation date is October 1. A spokesman for Municipal Energy, Bob Selzer, said other towns in Nebraska and Colorado are considering obtaining energy from wind, although the variable output of a wind installation means that it cannot be relied upon to supply all of an area's energy needs.The towns that will receive output include Alliance, Bayard, Burwell, Callaway, Gering, Kimball, Mitchell, Oxford, Red Cloud, West Point and Wood River. Other wind farms in Nebraska include installations at Lincoln, Springview, and Valley.
