DOE Chief Addresses Natural Gas Issue

LCG, June 24, 2003Today Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said that the U.S. gas supply crunch was not quite over yet.

Gas prices, which have been around twice last years at roughly $6 per million Btu, are likely to continue, at least according to Abraham. He noted that by no means are we out of the woods yet, although he did say that there was an increase in weekly gas inventories.

Recent storage rates are encouraging after a long, cold winter, but they are in part due to current mild summer temperatures.

Abraham is planning a National Petroleum Council meeting for Thursday in order to discuss possible measures to relieve the high prices and low supply.

Some economists and legislators are worried that the rising gas prices are hurting utilities and gas-dependent industries, although others believe supply will return to normal levels by November.
