EIA Publishes Regional Electricity Supply and Pricing Forecasts Using UPLAN Model

Madison Plant Construction Begins

LCG, Oct. 15, 2003--A 150-megawatt power plant that will be jointly owned by the utility Madison Gas and Electric Co. and the University of Wisconsin is officially under construction beginning today.

The plant will provide power to the university and the city of Madison, as well as steam and chilled water to the UW-Madison campus. The facility will boost local generation, whereas currently 85 percent of area power needs are met through imports, according to MGE's Steve Kraus.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle was scheduled to appear at a ceremony today, and to speak on streamlining the approval process and providing economic incentives for construction of more new power plants. The groups Friends of Responsible Energy (FORE) and Madison Physicians for Social Responsibility have voiced disapproval over the failure of MGE to incorporate $6 million worth of pollution control technology into the plant, which they say will result in an unnecessary airborne health hazard.
