NRC Extends Operating License for Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant
LCG, January 5, 2006--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) ruled on December 28 to extended the Seabrook nuclear power plant operating license by more than three years. FPL Energy is the primary owner of the station, located in southern New Hampshire. The request to extend the operating license was made in March of 2005 on the basis that the 40-year operating license should be extended to reflect the lengthy test period that the reactor operated at low power prior to receiving the full-power license. The amendment extends the expiration date of the Facility Operating License (FOL) from October 17, 2026, to March 15, 2030, to recapture zero- and low-power testing time. The extended date is 40 years from when the full-power license was issued. The low-power operating license was granted in October 1986, and the full-power operating license was granted in March 1990. Commercial operations commenced in August 1990.The plant includes one unit with a generating capacity of 1,218 MW.
