ERCOT Expects Record-breaking Peak Demand this Summer

LCG, March 2, 2018--The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) yesterday released its final Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy (SARA) report for the upcoming spring season (March - May) and its preliminary assessment for the summer season (June - September). ERCOT, the grid operator for most of Texas, is predicting record-breaking peak usage this summer driven by the strong Texas economy. The combination of record-breaking peak usage and the recent retirement of older electric generating units is expected to result in tight operating reserves.

Duke Files for New IGCC Project in Indiana

LCG, September 8, 2006--Duke Energy Indiana and Vectren Energy Delivery of Indiana have filed an application for "Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity" (CPCN) with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to build a coal-fired, electric generating station that would employ an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) design.

The proposed project would have a capacity of approximately 630 MW and would be built at Duke'sexisting Edwardsport generating station near Vincennes, Indiana. Once the new plant is operational, the old facilities, which include coal and oil units that have a capacity of 160-MW, would be retired.

The IGCC design includes coal gasification, with the gas created from the coal passed through a gas turbine to generate electricity. The hot exhaust gas from the turbine heats water to produce steam to power a steam turbine and generate electricity a second time. The gasification process offers the potential for lower cost solutions to capture and sequester CO2.

Duke and Vectren have commissioned GE Energy and Bechtel Corporation to develop an engineering and design study for the plant, which is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2007. Given favorable plant economics and regulatory review, construction could commence as early as mid-2007.

The application with the Commission is another positive step forward for this project. In September of last year, Cinergy - which was acquired by Duke - announced that it would start the preliminary engineering and design of an IGCC generating station in partnership with Vectren Corporation and that they planned to use GE Energy and Bechtel Corporation for the preliminary engineering study.
