GE's Advanced H System Gas Turbine Projects Gain Momentum

LCG, December 13, 2007--GE Energy (GE) yesterday announced the first firing of its advanced, H System gas turbine at Tokyo Electric Power Company's Futtsu Thermal Power Station. Futtsu Thermal Power Station will include three H Systems, and the total electric generating capacity will be 1,520 MW. The three 50-Hertz systems are scheduled to commence commercial operations between 2008 and 2010.

The H System, according to GE, can achieve 60 percent thermal efficiency and provide a 40 percent improvement in power density per installed megawatt relative to other combined-cycle systems. The end result is lower costs and less emissions, including greenhouse gases. The performance improvements result in part from a design that employs a closed-loop steam cooling system and advanced coating materials that enable higher firing temperatures required for increased efficiency.

In September 2007, GE announced that the first installation of the 60-hertz H System gas turbine at the Inland Empire Energy Center in southern California is on schedule, with the commercial operations scheduled to begin next summer. The Inland Empire Energy Center will include two GE 107H combined-cycle systems, with a total generating capacity of 775 MW. GE expects the first firing of Unit 1 to occur by year end, with the first firing of unit #2 expected early next year.

GE Energy's first 50-Hertz H system is located at the the Baglan Bay Power Station in South Wales and began operations in 2003.
