California PUC Approves SCE's Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project

LCG, December 18, 2009--The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) yesterday approved Southern California Edison's (SCE) application to install electric transmission facilities designed to allow more wind power to be developed in southern and central California. The newly approved project includes approximately 250 miles of new and upgraded transmission facilities and substations.

SCE's application is for segments 4-11 of the Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project (TRTP). Construction has commenced on the first three segments of the TRTP, which includes new lines and upgrades to move wind power from the remote Tehachapi region north of Los Angeles to California's load centers. Once all phases are complete, the TRTP transmission lines will enable 4,500 MW of wind power and other generation to be delivered to load centers.

An SCE spokesperson stated, "This important CPUC decision will enable SCE to tap into additional supplies of clean wind energy to help improve the environment and reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy....TRTP not only would facilitate the interconnection of new wind generation, but also will improve grid reliability to help meet the state's growing demand for electricity from renewable resources."

Construction on the newly approved segments of the TRTP are scheduled to commence next year, given necessary approval from federal land agencies. The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
