NRG Energy and First Solar to Team on 66-MW Solar Project in California

LCG, November 4, 2011--NRG Energy, Inc. and First Solar, Inc. yesterday announced an agreement for First Solar to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for NRG's 66 MW Alpine solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Lancaster, California. First Solar will also provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company will buy the power generated from the Alpine project under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). California passed a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) that requires utilities to increase their electric supply procurement of eligible renewable generating resources, including a target requirement of 33 percent in 2020.

NRG Energy now expects construction to start by year-end and be completed in the third quarter of next year. The project will use First Solar's advanced thin film PV modules, which use cadmium telluride (CdTe) as the semiconductor material.

First Solar's PV manufacturing capacity is also growing. Yesterday, First Solar announced the opening of additional capacity in Germany that will double its German production capacity to almost 500 MW. However, First Solar also stated that it will delay opening a newly constructed production plant in Vietnam.

NRG Energy and First Solar have previously teamed up on projects. In September, NRG Solar, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., commenced power production at its Roadrunner Solar Generating Facility, a 20-MW PV project built in southern New Mexico. The facility also employs First Solar's thin-film PV modules, which are mounted on single-axis trackers to follow the sun throughout the day in order to increase power production. First Solar provided engineering, construction and procurement services and will also be the operations and maintenance contractor for the facility.
