Detroit Edison's Application for Fermi 3 Reactor Receives Support from NRC
LCG, January 18, 2013--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently announced the staff's recommendation to the Commission that, based upon environmental considerations, the construction permit and operating license (COL) be issued as proposed for Enrico Fermi Unit 3. The reactor would be installed at the Detroit Edison Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant (Fermi) site, located approximately 30 miles southwest of Detroit, Michigan.
Detroit Edison submitted its application for a COL to the NRC in September 2008. The reactor design selected for the project is the GE-Hitachi Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design.
The NRC staff recommendation is based on the application, including the Environmental Report submitted by Detroit Edison; consultation with Federal, State, Tribal, and local agencies; the staff's independent review; and the staff's consideration of comments related to the environmental review that were received during the public scoping process and on the draft EIS.
The existing nuclear reactor, Fermi 2, is a boiling water reactor rated at 1,116 MW that began commercial operation in January 1988.
