Duke's Harris Nuclear Plant Shut Down for Repairs

LCG, May 17, 2013--Duke Energy removed the Harris Nuclear Plant from service Wednesday evening after indications of a flaw in the metal of the reactor vessel head were discovered. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) stated on May 15 that evaluations showed a 0.26-inch flaw that exhibited characteristics of primary water stress corrosion cracking.

"There is no evidence of any leakage" from the reactor, said a Duke spokesperson. She stated Duke has adequate capacity from other electric generating facilities to satisfy current customer demand. Duke stated that it expects to complete the repair and have the unit back online within a matter of weeks and that the Harris unit had been operating for 342 days since its last refueling outage in the spring of 2012.

The Harris Nuclear Plant is located about 25 miles southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina and includes one, 900-MW reactor that was commissioned in 1987. The plant was owned and operated by Progress Energy prior to its merger with Duke Energy last year.

Duke announced earlier this month that it notified the NRC that it plans to suspend its combined construction and operating license (COL) application to build two additional nuclear units at the Harris site.
