Exelon Generation Breaks Ground on 1,000-MW Combined-Cycle Plant in Texas

LCG, July 9, 2015-Exelon Genaration yesterday held the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new combined-cycle facility at Exelon's existing Colorado Bend Generating Station southwest of Houston, Texas. The project is expected to achieve commercial operation in 2017.

The new, gas-fired facility will add 1,000 MW of electric generating capacity to the existing 498-MW gas-fired generating facilities. The project will use General Electric's new 7HA.02 gas turbines, and the design incorporates dry cooling instead of the traditional wet cooling towers to minimize overall water usage.

The project is one of two new combined-cycle facilities that Exelon is developing in Texas. The other 1,000-MW project will be constructed at Exelon's existing Wolf Hollow Generating Station, located approximately 35 miles outside of Ft. Worth. The Wolf Hollow expansion is also expected to achieve commercial operation in 2017.

"Exelon is a forward-looking company, and what we see is a clean energy future that includes this kind of new technology, which uses little water and produces few emissions while generating electricity at a very low cost," said Exelon Generation's president and CEO. "We're delighted to be the first to employ this GE technology, and we're delighted to do it in Texas. This is how Exelon sees the energy future of America - clean, affordable and efficient."
