SDG&E and AES Showcase New Battery Storage Facilities
LCG, March 3, 2017--AES Energy Storage, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation,recently showcased two new Advancion® battery-based energy storage sites, totaling 37.5 MW, in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).
"California has created the launchpad for energy storage adoption on a global scale," said the President of AES Energy Storage. "By prioritizing storage to address real system needs today, SDG&E is leading the way, creating a sustainable model that others can follow to achieve a clean, unbreakable grid."
The larger site is located at a SDG&E substation in Escondido, California, where it hosts a 30 MW, four-hour duration energy storage project that is the world's largest lithium ion battery-based energy storage installation, according to AES. The energy storage facility is capable of storing the energy equivalent of serving 20,000 customers for four hours. The 400,000 batteries, similar to those in electric vehicles, were installed in nearly 20,000 modules and placed in 24 containers.
The second site is located at a SDG&E substation in El Cajon. Together, the arrays will provide enough capacity to power approximately 25,000 homes for four hours. Both arrays incorporate components from Advancion-certified suppliers, including batteries by Samsung SDI and power conversion systems by Parker Hannifin.
SDG&E and AES announced plans to proceed with two energy storage arrays last August, following the approval by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) of the proposal by SDG&E to build the projects. In May 2016, the CPUC directed Southern California electric utilities to accelerate the installation of new energy storage options to enhance regional energy reliability and enable the addition of more intermittent renewable energy resources.
The CPUC requires SDG&E to procure a total of 165 MW of energy storage by 2020 that is to be operational by 2024.
