NV Energy Announces Plans to Add Over 1,000 MW of New Solar Energy Plus Battery Energy Storage Capacity

LCG, June 1, 2018--NV Energy yesterday announced it has contracted for over 1,000 MW of new renewable energy resources to be built in Nevada. NV Energy has six new, 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, and three of the projects include a total of 100 MW of battery energy storage for a four hour period. All projects are expected to be completed and serving customers by the end of 2021. The company will file this resource plan with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) on June 1, 2018. This will be the first time NV Energy requests approval to build 100 MW of battery energy capacity.

NV Energy's Chief Executive Officer stated that the renewable energy expansion is the largest such investment in the Nevada's history. "We calculate that the direct investment in Nevada's economy, which includes the cost of construction, will be greater than $2 billion. The six new projects position NV Energy to keep its commitment to double renewable energy by 2023 and, importantly, by diversifying our state's electricity generation portfolio, will reduce the costs to serve customers."

According to the press release, these projects also represent a step forward in the company's long-term goal of serving Nevada customers with 100 percent renewable energy.

The six solar projects are the result of a competitive solicitation initiated in January of this year. Three of the projects will be located in northern Nevada and three will be located in southern Nevada.

The six projects are: (i) Battle Mountain Solar Project, a 101-MW solar PV project located near Battle Mountain, Nevada that includes 25 MW of battery energy storage for a four-hour period under development by Cypress Creek Renewables; (ii) Dodge Flat Solar Energy Center, a 200-MW solar PV project located east of Reno, Nevada that will integrate 50 MW of battery energy storage for four hours under development by NextEra Energy Resources, LLC; (iii) Fish Springs Ranch Solar Energy Center, a 100-MW solar PV project located north of Reno, Nevada that will integrate 25 MW of battery energy storage for four hours under development by NextEra Energy Resources, LLC; (iv) Eagle Shadow Mountain Solar Farm, a 300-MW solar PV project located north of Las Vegas that is being developed by 8minutenergy Renewables; (v) Copper Mountain Solar 5, a 250-MW solar PV project in Eldorado Valley, just south of Boulder City, Nevada under development by Sempra Renewables, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy; and (vi) Techren Solar V, a 50-MW solar PV project in Eldorado Valley, just south of Boulder City, Nevada under development by Techren Solar LLC (and will be adjacent to Techren Solar I, II, III and IV, which currently are in the construction stage).

NV Energy has the option to not proceed with the proposed resource plan in the event Nevada voters pass Question 3 on the ballot this November.
