NextEra Energy Seeks License Extension for Point Beach Nuclear Plant

LCG, November 23, 2020--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently received an application from NextEra Energy to extend the licenses for the two reactors at Point Beach Nuclear Plant for an additional 20 years. The NRC had previously approved 20-year license extensions that are now scheduled to expire in 2030 and 2033. The newly submitted applications for subsequent (or second) license renewals (SLRs) will allow for the reactors to operate a total of 80 years.

The carbon-free, 1,200-MW nuclear plant includes two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and is located on a 1,200 acre site in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. In 2019, Point Beach generated approximately 14 percent of all the electricity created in Wisconsin.

The commercial operation dates for Unit 1 and Unit 2 are December 1970 and March 1973, respectively. NextEra Energy Resources purchased the plant from Wisconsin Electric Power Company in October 2007.

In December 2019, the NRC approved an SLR application filed in 2018 for the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Units 3 and 4, which are owned by another NextEra affiliate, Florida Power & Light (FPL). That approval was the first time the NRC issued renewed licenses authorizing reactor operation from 60 to 80 years. In March 2020, the NRC also approved the SLRs for Exelon Generation's Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3, which are located in Pennsylvania.
