LCG, November 12, 2025--Xcel Energy, together with the Utility Consumer Advocate (UCA), Colorado Energy Office (CEO), and Trial Staff of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), filed a petition on November 10 requesting Commission approval to keep Comanche Generating Station Unit 2 available for up to one additional year after its currently planned retirement on December 31, 2025.

Southwest Power Pool Board Approves New Process to Accelerate High Impact Large Load Connections
LCG, September 16, 2025--Southwest Power Pool’s (SPP) Board of Directors today announced that the Board approved a process to facilitate the connection of large users of electricity to the power grid while continuing to support energy needs for the entire region. SPP's new process is designed to incorporate transmission service, generation, load interconnection and other relevant reliability studies into a single framework that enables timely, informed decision-making and action.
SPP’s High Impact Large Load (HILL) policy followed months of collaboration among stakeholders and SPP staff to address the challenge of connecting customers with significant new demands, such as AI-driven data centers or manufacturing, while balancing essential goals of reliability and affordability.
"We’re striving to stay ahead of the game," said SPP's Vice President for Engineering. "Large loads want answers now. They are motivated to invest and are looking for opportunities to connect to the grid now."
The HILL policy will establish a 90-day study-and-approval process to interconnect large loads that will be paired with new generation (either on-site or nearby) or to interconnect large loads with existing or planned generation. According to SPP, the load interconnections should then be accelerated through integrated design, study, registration and operations. Moreover, the HILL process is designed such that it should enable early detection of system constraints, improve coordination across entities and prepare operators for real-time impacts.
"I’m very pleased we’ve adopted a policy that addresses an urgent need and opportunity in the SPP region," said an SPP Board Member. "I appreciate SPP’s quick work to develop an innovative proposal and our members’ and Regional State Committee’s active participation in refining it. This is a great example of our stakeholder process at its best, and I’m confident we now have an excellent approach to meeting the needs of our members and large-load customers looking to locate in the SPP region."
