N.Y. ISO Worries About Power Shortage, Price Spikes

LCG, June 1, 2001--The New York Independent System Operator yesterday warned that a power crisis threatens the Empire State, though there are unlikely to be California-style blackouts this summer.

The ISO, urging regulators to streamline the permitting process for new power plants, said the state could face power shortages and increased electricity prices as early as next year if new generation does not come on line.

"New York has no significant generation coming on and we are expecting load increases. That spells trouble," said Bill Museler, chief executive of the ISO.

As in California, there are many proposals for new power plants 65 at latest count but only five have been accepted. And those five, even if they clear all regulatory hurdles and survive local appeals, could not begin to produce power for at least two years.

"It is crucial some of those plants are approved this year or power reliability will be at very serious risk and prices will be judged totally unacceptable," Museler said.
