Nuclear Plants To Be Online in China

LCG, Jan. 30, 2002--Three nuclear power plants now under construction in different parts of China are expected to be operating this year, according to a Chinese nuclear official.

In the eastern province of Zhejian, testing has been taking place since last year at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Station. Operations on the second phase of the plant are to begin in June. The third phase should be brought online by the end of 2002.

In Quangdong, the Ling'ao Nuclear Power Plant will be that province's second largest commercial plant. The eastern Jiangsu province is home to the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, where major construction will take place.

The projected capacity at all nuclear plants is estimated to be 6,600 megawatts by 2005. The demand for power in China's coastal regions has grown rapidly with the growth taking place in the past two decades. Nuclear power accounts for 1 percent of the national power supply, whereas in the United States and Japan, nuclear plants supply nearly 22 and over 33 percent respectively.
