Nevada Governor Vetoes Yucca Mountain Nuke Disposal

LCG, April 8, 2002--Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn left for the nation's capital today with the intent to file papers vetoing the Federal decision to use Nevada's Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste depository.

The governor is reported to have said, "Yucca Mountain is not inevitable, and Yucca Mountain is no bargaining chip, and so long as I am governor, it will never become one."

The governor will file to veto President Bush's nuclear waste recommendation in both the Senate and the House; in 1982 Nevada was given the right to veto the presidential recommendation.

Accusing the project of representing poor science and policy, the Nevada governor charged that transportation risks were not considered when Yucca Mountain was chosen as the only option to be considered for nuclear waste disposal.

The Federal Department of Energy wants to store 77,000 tons of highly radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel at the proposed Yucca Mountain facility. Just over two million people reside in Nevada, and therefore the Silver state has only four legislative representatives.

Governor Guinn has asked all Nevada citizens to contribute a dollar or more to the Nevada Protection Fund.
