LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

New England and New York ISO's Want Common RTO
LCG, Jan. 29, 2002--The two independent system operators serving the power markets of the northeastern states will begin to consider the design of a single regional transmission organization (RTO) that encompasses both of their adjacent territories, they announced today.According to an agreement announced by ISO New England Inc. (ISO-NE) and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), a unified Northeast Regional Transmission Organization (NERTO) can support reliability and more extensive market competition. The process of developing the RTO could help to satisfy the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's order that transmission organizations submit plans for RTO design and implementation.The president and CEO of ISO-NE, Gordon van Welie, said "we both have strong, existing infrastructure, complementary sources of generation, similarly advanced stages of restructuring and generation divestiture, and a greater level of competition than other regions. We have been working closely together on standardizing the market for almost a year, and this agreement represents another significant step forward."The not-for-profit corporations will seek input from market participants and state regulators. Among the issues to be discussed will be transmission bottlenecks around Greater Boston, New York City, and southwestern Connecticut. The market to be created will continue to have strong ties to the Canadian market to the north. NYISO's president and CEO William J. Museler said, "we see a lot of synergies between the two ISO's and Canada."
