Neptune Undersea Cable from PJM to Long Island Activated

LCG, July 3, 2007--The Neptune Regional Transmission System, LLC announced yesterday that it has completed extensive testing and activated a new, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between Sayreville, New Jersey, and Long Island, New York. The cable provides the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) access to receive additional electricity from PJM to manage power costs and improve reliability.

The completion of the Neptune project allows 660 MW at a DC voltage of 500 kV to flow via an HVDC cable, with 51 miles of the cable underwater and 14 miles under land. Electricity from the PJM grid is converted from AC to DC power at the Sayerville converter station. The energy is transmitted to the Duffy Avenue converter station on Long Island, where the power is converted back to AC power for distribution across Long Island.

The estimated cost of the Neptune project is $600 million. Neptune Regional Transmission System LLC, the owner and operator of the transmission system, will place the system at the control of LIPA.
