X-energy Commences First Irradiation Tests of Advanced TRISO-X Nuclear Fuel at Idaho National Laboratory

LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

CPS Energy Forges Ahead with Western Ranch Solar Project

LCG, June 24, 2009--CPS Energy announced Monday that it executed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tessera Solar for the electricity generated from the 27-MW, Western Ranch Solar Project to be constructed in western Texas. The project will employ the SunCatcher power system designed and manufactured by Stirling Energy Systems (SES), an affiliate of Tessera Solar.

The SunCatcher power system consists of a parabolic dish of mirrors - spanning 40 feet across - that reflects the energy of the sun onto a receiver called a power conversion unit (PCU). The solar energy heats hydrogen gas in tubes in the PCU, and the gas passes through a heat exchanger to run a four-cylinder Stirling engine, which drives a generator to produce power.

The project will include 1,080 SunCatcher dishes, which have recently been redesigned to lower costs and ease maintenance. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin next summer, with the first units planned to commence operations by the end of 2010. The project generating capacity can be increased to 130 MW.

CPS Energy provides electric service to approximately 695,000 electric customers in and around San Antonio. Western Ranch Solar represents a big step by CPS Energy towards its commitment to develop 100 MW of solar resources and to meet 20 percent of its customers? peak electrical demand by 2020.
