KCP&L Announces Successful Completion of Testing at New Iatan 2, Coal-fired Unit

LCG, August 27, 2010--Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L) and KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company (formerly Aquila) yesterday announced that the new Iatan 2, electric generating facility completed in-service testing. Both companies are subsidiaries of Great Plains Energy Incorporated.

The 850-MW, coal-fired unit, located at the existing Iatan Generating Station just outside of Weston, Missouri, will burn Powder River Basin (PRB) coal.

The new unit was agreed upon as part of KCP&L's Comprehensive Energy Plan that was approved by the Kansas and Missouri Commissions in the summer of 2005. The in-service testing is subject to confirmation by regulatory staff of the two Commissions.

KCP&L is now working towards commercial acceptance with the primary vendors on the project.

The Comprehensive Energy Plan (CEP) evolved through a collaborative process with stakeholders that, in addition to allowing Iatan 2, included mandated environmental upgrades at the Iatan 1, coal-fired, power plant. The installation of the pollution control equipment at Iatan 1 was completed in February 2009. The CEP also includes renewable energy projects, transmission and distribution infrastructure upgrades and customer energy efficiency programs.
