NRC Issues EIS for NRG's Proposed Nuclear Units in Texas
LCG, March 4, 2011--The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Wednesday a favorable final environmental impact statement (EIS) for building two new Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) at the South Texas Project, an existing nuclear station located approximately 90 miles southwest of Houston.
Nuclear Innovation North America (NINA), a partnership between NRG and Toshiba Corp., applied for the permits in late 2007. The proposed new reactors must still clear a number of regulatory hurdles, including the review by the independent Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, a final safety evaluation report by NRC staff and a final decision by the 5-member commission. NINA plans to receive a construction license in 2012 and commence operations of the two units in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
The South Texas Project (STP) Nuclear Operating Company, which currently operates units 1 and 2, will also operate the new 1,350-MW units. Units 1 and 2 are 1,410-MW pressurized water reactors that commenced operations in the late 1980s.
