DOE Selects NuScale Power for SMR Development

LCG, December 13, 2013--The Energy Department (DOE) selected NuScale Power LLC as the winner of up to $226 million in funding to support the development of small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

The funding will support the design, certification and other necessary steps to achieve commercial operation of the 45-MW NuScale Power Module small reactor design by 2025. The DOES funds will be spread over a five-year period.

Project participants include NuScale's partner Rolls-Royce, its majority owner Fluor Corp. and utility Energy Northwest. The project will be based at NuScale's testing facility in Corvallis, Oregon.

The DOE issued the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) earlier this year to provide support for SMR development and accelerate design certification towards commercialization. DOE?s FOA criteria focused on innovative new technologies that improve safety by reducing natural hazards.

Energy Secretary Moniz stated, "Small modular reactors represent a new generation of safe, reliable, low-carbon nuclear energy technology and provide a strong opportunity for America to lead this emerging global industry. The Energy Department is committed to strengthening nuclear energy?s continuing important role in America's low carbon future, and new technologies like small modular reactors will help ensure our continued leadership in the safe, secure and efficient use of nuclear power worldwide."

The DOE is also supporting Babcock & Wilcox mPower, Inc. (B&W mPower) and its design, which is based upon a 180-MW, integral pressurized water reactor design that uses a fully underground containment structure.
