California Sets New Record for Solar Power Generation
LCG, January 15, 2014--The California Independent System Operator (ISO) recently announced that a new record was set for solar power generation in California. According to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), on January 7, a new record was set with utility-scale solar power generation exceeding 3,000 MW. In addition, there was considerable generation from the solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed on roof tops throughout California.
The rapid growth in solar generation is driven in large part by the many mega-projects in California. One new solar PV facility adding to the solar power generation in California is the Topaz Solar Farm in San Luis Obispo County, which recently announced that it is now producing 300 MW of power. The Desert Sunlight project, located in Riverside County, is expected in February to commence operations and generate up to 300 MW.
The renewable energy generated is for delivery to PG&E and other utilities that are striving to meet the rising renewable energy requirements dictated by California's Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS). The standards include utilities achieving sales targets of 25 percent of retails sales by December 31, 2016 and 33 percent of retails sales by December 31, 2020.
Significant progress has been made towards achieving the goals. In June 2013, the California ISO announced that a new record was set for solar power output of 2,071 MW. The 1,000 MW threshold was reached in September 2012.
