Virginia State Corporation Commission Approves Dominion's Greensville Power Station
LCG, March 30, 2016--Dominion Virginia Power announced yesterday that the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) approved the company's request for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) to construct the Greensville Power Station, a 1,588-MW combined-cycle facility in Greensville County, Virginia. The natural gas-fired project is estimated to cost $1.3 billion. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with operations to commence in 2019.
The CEO of Dominion Generation Group stated, "We are pleased that the SCC has granted approval for the Greensville Power Station. This project will ultimately bring low cost, reliable electricity to our customers while saving them $2 billion over the life of the plants' operation, in addition to providing a major economic impact and good paying jobs for Southside Virginia."
The electric generating facility plans include three Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MHPSA) M501J gas turbines, each of which has a power output of 327 MW. The turbines will be manufactured and assembled at MHPSA's Savannah Machinery Works in Georgia.
The gas-fired, Greensville Power Station is part of Dominion's plan to meet stricter new air quality and proposed carbon dioxide emissions standards while keeping pace with growing customer electricity demands.
The project will be built just a few miles from Dominion's Brunswick Power Station, a similar combined cycle project that commenced construction in May 2014. The 1,360-MW combined-cycle project, which includes three of MHPSA's M501GAC gas turbines (each with a capacity of 276 MW), is scheduled to be fully operational next month.
