LCG, December 2, 2025--The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the selection of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Holtec Government Services (Holtec) to support early deployments of advanced, light-water small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States. With this announcement, DOE is supporting the first-mover teams to develop and construct the first Gen III+ small modular reactor (Gen III+ SMR) plants in the United States. The project teams will receive up to $800 million in federal cost-shared funding to advance initial projects in Tennessee (TVA) and Michigan (Holtec) and act to expand the Nation’s capacity while facilitating additional follow-on projects and associated supply chains.

SoCalGas Announces H2 Hydrogen Home Project
LCG, December 16, 2020--Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) yesterday announced it will build a state-of-the-art demonstration project to show how hydrogen may be used to help achieve California's aggressive climate goals. The "H2 Hydrogen Home" will include a home, solar panels, a battery, an electrolyzer that uses solar power to create hydrogen, and a fuel cell to convert that hydrogen back to carbon-free electricity. The hydrogen gas will also be blended with natural gas and used in the home's appliances. The H2 Hydrogen Home project is expected to be complete by late 2021.
The president of SoCalGas stated, "California will continue to lead by bringing green hydrogen into its energy mix, just as it led by integrating renewable electricity and batteries for electric storage. The H2 Hydrogen Home will help guide decision-making that will ultimately create the 21st century energy system needed to provide clean, affordable and resilient energy for Californians."
The H2 Hydrogen Home design will use solar panels to power the project's home on sunny days, with surplus electricity stored in the home battery over short periods for use later at night or during cloudy days. In addition, surplus solar power will power the electrolyzer for hydrogen production. The hydrogen can be stored and then either (i) converted back to electricity with an on-site fuel cell or (ii) blended with natural gas and used in the home's heat pump HVAC unit, water heater, clothes dryer, and gas stove.
"This home is a great way to show in a tangible way how green hydrogen can store renewable power for an unlimited length of time and how it can be reconverted to electricity whenever it's needed," said the founder and president of the Green Hydrogen Coalition.
The use of hydrogen for energy storage may provide a viable path forward to address the need for long-term energy storage to complement intermittent, renewable energy resources, like wind and solar power, desired to meet California's economy-wide, carbon neutrality target by 2045. Converting renewable electricity to hydrogen allows the energy to be stored for weeks, months or even years. The hydrogen can then be converted back to carbon-free electricity and dispatched to the power grid when it is needed, potentially using either gas turbines or fuel cells. Battery energy storage systems are generally the preferred storage solution for less than 8-hour durations, but costs and other factors limit their viability for long-term storage applications.
