LCG, May 30, 2025--NuScale Power Corporation (NuScale), a leading provider of advanced small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology, yesterday announced that it has received design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its uprated 77 MW power modules. NuScale states that it remains the only SMR technology company with design approval from the NRC, and the company remains on track for deployment by 2030, with 50- and 77-MW SMR options.

LCG, May 29, 2025--The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released an analysis yesterday showing that the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the grid operator for most of the state, is increasing its curtailment of the rapidly growing solar- and wind-powered generation facilities in order to balance electricity supply and demand, which is necessary to maintain a stable electric system.

Siemens Energy to Provide Hydrogen-Capable Gas Turbines to OPPD
LCG, June 18, 2021--Siemens Energy announced yesterday that Siemens Energy will provide two F-Class turbines to power Omaha Public Power District's (OPPD) new Turtle Creek Station Peaking Plant in Papillion, Nebraska. The simple cycle turbine facility will be used to modernize back up generation in OPPD's fleet and generate only as needed to provide resilient and reliable power that complements renewable resources to serve OPPD's customers. The new facility is expected to be operational in late spring of 2023.
The two SGT6-5000F turbines will offer fuel flexibility aligned to reduce CO2 emissions. The turbines will be able to use up to 30 percent hydrogen and biodiesel in support of future technology advancements. The turbines also offer a fast start time and low emissions, as well as help to rapidly stabilize transmissions system to adjust for the variable output of growing solar generation.
The Turtle Creek Station is part of OPPD's "Power with Purpose" project that aims to provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally sensitive energy services to customers. This involves developing up to 600 MW of utility-scale solar projects and up to 600 MW of modernized replacement and backup natural gas generation resources. The Turtle Creek Station will be a significant step towards the achieving the backup natural gas resources.
Siemens Energy has set an ambitious target to have all its new gas turbines (the SGT6-5000F included) capable of burning 100 percent hydrogen on or before the end of 2030. Advancements in combustion turbines to use hydrogen (produced with no CO2 emissions) blended into the fuel mix can support efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the electric sector.
