SPP Board Approves Alternative, Accelerated Generation Interconnection Process to Improve Regional Resource Adequacy

LCG, May 8, 2025--The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Board of Directors approved SPP’s proposed Expedited Resource Adequacy Study (ERAS) at its May 6 meeting. SPP developed the new ERAS in collaboration with its stakeholders in response to the growing need to add new generating resources before the region’s generating capacity is outpaced by its electricity demands. ERAS is intended to be a one-time, expedited study process designed to significantly accelerate the addition of new power generation facilities to the grid and address concerns about the near term ability to maintain the affordable and reliable electric service that consumers expect.

Canadian Solar Announces New Battery Energy Storage Projects in California and Texas

LCG, March 6, 2025--Canadian Solar Inc. (Canadian Solar) announced today that e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar majority-owned subsidiary CSI Solar Co., Ltd. (CSI Solar), has secured Battery Supply Agreements and Long-Term Service Agreements (LTSA) for two major battery energy storage projects developed by Aypa Power, a Blackstone portfolio company. These projects are designed to improve grid resilience and support renewable energy integration. Construction of the projects is planned to begin in Q3 2025.

The LTSA's include the supply and commissioning of a 160 MW AC/806 MWh DC Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in California and a 200 MW AC/998 MWh DC BESS in Texas. Approximately 370 SolBank 3.0 units will be included in the projects. Following commissioning, e-STORAGE will oversee system maintenance and operations under a 20-year LTSA.

e-STORAGE will integrate its proprietary SolBank 3.0 battery energy storage solution, featuring lithium-iron-phosphate battery technology, an active balancing battery management system, and advanced liquid cooling to ensure project safety and performance.

The President of e-STORAGE stated, "We are proud to support Aypa Power in delivering utility-scale energy storage projects that will play a pivotal role in enhancing grid flexibility and reliability. Our SolBank technology is designed to provide safe, high-performance energy storage solutions that meet the growing demands of the market. These projects highlight the increasing role of battery storage in stabilizing renewable energy supply, and we remain committed to driving innovation and delivering high-quality solutions that support a cleaner, more sustainable energy future."

These two battery projects may have plenty of company this year. The EIA recently projected U.S. battery storage capacity growth to set a record of 18.2 GW of utility-scale battery storage to be added to the grid in 2025. Last year, U.S. battery storage achieved record growth when power providers added 10.3 GW of new battery storage capacity.
