PG&E Awarded First Civil Nuclear Credit from DOE to Support Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant

LCG, August 14, 2026--The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that it has awarded Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) $271 million to help support the extended operations of the company's nuclear power facility, Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which is located near Avila Beach, California. The federal Civil Nuclear Credit Program (CNCP) funding will allow the 2,240-MW nuclear facility, which supplies nearly ten percent of the electricity consumed by the state's population, to continue to safely generate secure, carbon-free, baseload power to customers. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved 20-year license extensions on Diablo Canyon’s two reactors last April.

The DOE Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy stated, "Keeping Diablo Canyon online is critical to meeting California’s growing demand for affordable, reliable, and secure electricity. The Civil Nuclear Credit Program is helping preserve this vital source of baseload power and ensuring that we don’t prematurely take reliable generation off the grid. The Department of Energy is committed to unleashing American nuclear energy and keeping facilities like Diablo Canyon operating safely and reliably for the American people."

Diablo Canyon has operated safely since 1985. The nuclear facility contains two Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) units that are licensed until 2029 and 2030, respectively. Diablo Canyon's two units were originally scheduled to cease commercial operations by 2025. The CNCP was created, providing an additional economic incentive to remain open and extend operations. Thus PG&E submitted an application to the NRC to renew Diablo Canyon's operating licenses in November, 2023. On January 17, 2024, the DOE announced the signing of the credit award and payment agreement with PG&E to finalize terms for $1.1 billion in credit payments via the CNCP. PG&E can use the funds to help cover the cost of reactor component replacements, equipment upgrades, and fuel procurement, or address unforeseen costs associated with extending the plant’s operations and maintaining continued service.
