St. Joe Restores Service from Fire-Damaged Unit
LCG, Aug. 11, 2000--St. Joseph Light & Power Co. said yesterday that it had restored to service the 97 megawatt unit at its Lake Road plant that was damaged by fire on June 7. The unit provides more than a quarter of St. Joes system requirements."Repairs and startup tests have been completed and the unit is producing electricity," Dwight Svuba, vice president for energy supply, said. "This is about three weeks ahead of our original estimate that the unit would be returned to service in early September."The company said that total cost of the fire, after insurance coverage, would be about $4 million. During the shutdown, St. Joe had to buy replacement power that turned out to be a lot more expensive than that produced at Lake Road.Getting the unit back in service three weeks ahead of schedule, coupled with mild temperatures, will save the company about $3.1 million.St. Joe said it will seek recovery of these costs as part of its next electric general rate case. If theproposed merger with UtiliCorp United Inc. is approved, however, some portion of these costs maybe expensed.
